Lesson Policies

GETTING STARTED
Our first meeting / your free trial lesson will usually be 30-40 minutes at a time we agree on. After that trial lesson, I ask the student/family to commit to four lessons at the same weekly time, and after that, to commit to lessons at the same weekly time for the remainder of the academic semester (or summer, if it is that time of the year). As I am traveling to many of my students to teach them, please be aware that my ability to change your regular lesson time during a given academic semester / summer will usually be limited at best.

PAYMENTS
Lesson payments (unless your student has a Florida Step-Up for Students scholarship) are done through Fons, an app and website that automates billing and scheduling. All students/families are required to set up recurring lesson payments in the Fons system by either card or bank account transfer.
Lessons are billed in "packages"; this means you will pay in advance for a set of four lessons at a time, and each lesson we do will be deducted from that total. When three lessons have been taken, Fons will notify you, and when the fourth lesson is taken, Fons will automatically charge for the next set of four lessons and send you a receipt of the payment.

If your student has a Florida Step-Up For Students scholarship, please let me know. I am an approved service provider and can bill lessons directly through their online platform.

SCHEDULING, CANCELLATIONS, AND SICKNESS
Lesson scheduling is also done through the Fons system. When your student begins taking lessons, you will "confirm" (reserve) your weekly lesson time in the Fons calendar. I require notice
at least two weeks in advance of any intentions to skip or cancel a lesson. At any time up to two weeks before a lesson, you can access the Fons calendar to cancel a lesson free of charge. If it is less than two weeks before the lesson, the cancelled lesson will still be counted towards the current package of lessons, unless it is due to sickness or emergency. Each month, I will send a courtesy reminder email for you to access the Fons calendar and enter any upcoming lessons that you intend to skip or cancel.

If the student must miss a lesson due to an emergency or sickness, please let me know as soon as possible. I will do my best to arrange make-up lessons due to emergency or sickness, but as I am traveling to many of my students to teach them, please be aware that my ability to do make-up lessons will usually be limited at best. In some cases, if the student is too sick to meet in-person but feeling well enough to do a lesson and my travel allows, I may offer to do an online lesson during the student's normal lesson time. If a make-up or online lesson due to emergency or sickness is not feasible, the cancelled lesson will not be counted towards the current package of lessons.

If a student misses or cancels a lesson less than two weeks before the lesson for any reason other than emergency or sickness, the lesson will not be made up and payment for that lesson will not be refunded.

If I cancel a lesson, I will not charge you for it.

PRACTICE

Consistent, focused practice is absolutely essential to progress in learning to play the piano. Acknowledging that exceptions do occasionally happen, all students are expected to practice at least 5 days per week for an age-appropriate amount of time (an expectation we will set in lessons) and to complete all assigned written exercises AND all listening assignments. Students are expected to keep a record of their practice, logging assignments completed and overall practice time in the digital assignments platform used for lessons.

REFERRALS

Referrals are some of the best advertising for a music studio. To thank my current students and their families for referring their friends, I offer a free lesson for every referral that results in a new student taking at least one month of lessons.
